Burrower Bugs: Intriguing Soil-Dwelling Insects
Scientific Classification and Characteristics
Burrower bugs, also known as seed bugs, belong to the family Cydnidae. These soil-inhabiting insects are typically small, ranging from 4 to 15 millimeters in length, and are characterized by their flattened bodies and dull brown or black coloration. Their forewings are leathery and cover the membranous hindwings. Burrower bugs possess piercing-sucking mouthparts and feed primarily on plant sap, seeds, and organic matter in the soil.
Distribution and Habitat
Burrower bugs are widely distributed across the United States and Canada, as well as in other regions around the world. They are commonly found in moist soil environments, such as gardens, fields, forests, and along the edges of water bodies. These insects prefer loose, well-drained soils that provide ample hiding places and access to their food sources. Burrower bugs are generally not considered pests, but they can occasionally cause damage to plants by feeding on seeds and roots.
